East Cobb restaurant update: Loyal Tavern closes at Parkaire

East Cobb Loyal Tavern closes

We got a tip over the weekend that Loyal Tavern—originally known as Loyal Q and Brew—has closed its doors at the Parkaire Landing Shopping Center.

There’s no word on when the restaurant shut its doors, and there’s no mention on its social media accounts or the restaurant group’s website.

There is this sign on the front door:

The renamed restaurant opened only in March, replacing a smokehouse restaurant with tavern fare and a sports bar theme.

The Loyal Q owners were behind the successful Taco Mac chain when they opened Loyal Q in East Cobb in August 2017.

Last year they opened the first Loyal Tavern in downtown Roswell, and what is now the only remaining Loyal Q in Alpharetta.

The East Cobb location was in a competitive area for both concepts. Close by on Lower Roswell Road are Sam’s BBQ-1 and Bradley’s Bar and Grill.

Also nearby in the Johnson Ferry corridor is the Suburban Tap.

East Cobb restaurant update: La Novia Taqueria now known as Moxie Taco

It’s in the same location at Paper Mill Village (255 Village Parkway Suite 330), with the same hours and same menu, but a new name. From the Moxie Restaurant Group today comes this news:Moxie Taco

“In honor of our loyal and supportive East Cobb customers who have called it “moxie taco” from its development, we have decided to officially rename La Novia Taqueria! Come by for some hot cheese dip and a cold margarita to brighten up this dreary weather week.”

When La Novia Taqueria opened in 2017 the building that formerly housed Valenit’s restaurant and Caffe Fortunato and had been painted yellow. It’s now a gray shade.

The East Cobb taqueria scene also has grown, with the addition of Taqueria Tsunami last spring on Johnson Ferry Road.

The hours for Moxie Taco are daily, 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Update: Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square reopening slated for January

Chick fil A Woodlawn Square reopening

After getting some reader inquiries about the subject, we’ve got an answer to a question we’ve heard asked a lot in recent weeks: The Chick-fil-A Woodlawn Square reopening (1201 Johnson Ferry Road) is set for January.

That’s the word we got from Chick-fil-A representative Callie Bowers, who said there isn’t a specific date that’s been determined but is likely in the range of early- to mid-January.

The location has been closed since July for the construction of a new building and parking lot, including a double drive-through. When it closed, company officials were hoping to reopen in November.

When we last drove by a week or so ago, the new building was nearly completed, but everything around it is a pile of mud and dirt.

In the meantime, employment applications are being accepted for anyone aged 16 and older.

Bowers said there will be a full grand reopening schedule of activities.

Update: Another delay for East Cobb Jason’s Deli opening

East Cobb Jason's Deli opening

We got a message today saying that the East Cobb Jason’s Deli opening has been pushed back again, to mid-November.

We noted on Monday, which was to have been the opening, that construction delays resulted in a delay to Nov. 5.

Greg Feltner, the managing partner for the East Cobb Jason’s Deli, said in an e-mail this afternoon that the renovations are taking longer than expected, and here’s why:

“The building is more than 30 years old, so we basically had to gut the inside and start from scratch. The construction crew did not realize how long that would take.”

He didn’t mention a specific date because the construction crew is replacing all the tile in the kitchen, “which we were told is at least a 10-day job.”

The Jason’s Deli space at Merchants Exchange (1205 Johnson Ferry Road) has been the home for Sage Social Kitchen, Chequers Seafood and Steak and Houlihan’s.

The Freakin’ Incan restaurant moving to Sandy Plains Village

The original location of The Freakin’ Incan restaurant is on the move. The Freakin' Incan restaurant

The Peruvian dining spot isn’t going too far away, from its current location at 4905 Alabama Road in Roswell, along the Fulton-Cobb border and near the convergence of Sandy Plains Road and Mabry Road.

It’s opening up in larger space and with a full bar next to the Movie Tavern (4651 Woodstock Road), in the Sandy Plains Village shopping center. That’s only a block or so away.

The Freakin’ Incan made the announcement today, and said the last day of service at its current venue will be next Wednesday, Oct. 24. The restaurant will reopen in the new space in November but a specific date wasn’t given.

The Freakin’ Incan started out as a food truck and catering venture, with owner Mikiel Arnold, a native of Peru, opening a restaurant in Roswell in 2014. He expanded to Tucker last year.

Zeal Kitchen and Bar owner sells restaurant; plans venture in Roswell

Zeal Kitchen and Bar closing

Update: We’ll have more later, but a Los Bravos Mexican restaurant will be replacing Zeal.

Lots of restaurant news in East Cobb this week, some good, as we noted Tuesday about the opening of Jason’s Deli, and some not: A little less than five years after opening to some fanfare on Johnson Ferry Road, Zeal Kitchen and Bar will give way to a new restaurant early next year.

East Cobb News contacted owner Scott Sawant, who said “I got an offer earlier this week and I took the offer and sold to another company, which will open another different restaurant [in] Jan. 2019.”

Sawant did not identify the buyer. He said that a failing health inspection earlier this year was a factor in his decision.

Zeal passed a follow-up inspection, but he said in an interview with East Cobb News at the time that overcoming that kind of bad publicity is tougher than a bad review.

“It feels like you failed somebody in a relationship,” Sawant said.

This week, he told us that “we thought we could continue till at least December 31st or even longer.

“After the unfortunate health score in April we tried to recover and recuperate but it was tough.”

He said he is planning other ventures, starting early next year in Roswell, but did not elaborate.

“Now we are emptying the space,” Sawant said of Zeal, which was located in the former Empress of China II space in the Market Plaza Shopping Center, adjacent to Merchant’s Walk.

When we went by, we saw a closed sign and brown paper covering the inside front doors.

Sawant is a Wheeler High School graduate who emphasized his local roots and understanding of the East Cobb dining scene as it was drawing notice from Atlanta food critics.

He opened Zeal in October 2013, two years after Doug Turbush opened Seed at Merchant’s Walk, setting off an upscale dining wave in East Cobb that has had some notable casualties in recent months.

In February, the owners of Muss and Turner’s pulled the plug on their East Cobb restaurant at Woodlawn Square further down Johnson Ferry Road.

Zeal was Sawant’s first restaurant as an owner, after he worked at nearby LaMadeleine and with that chain as a corporate trainer.

The East Cobb restaurant scene also has become more competitive in recent months with the opening nearby of Taqueria Tsunami, Black Swan Tavern, La Novia Taqueria and Stockyard Burgers and Bones.

Report: Sage Woodfire Tavern Windy Hill restaurant put up for sale

Sage Woodfire Tavern Windy Hill

Less than a year after it opened, the Sage Woodfire Tavern Windy Hill restaurant is on the auction block.

ToNeTo Atlanta, which covers Atlanta-area restaurant and retail doings, reported Tuesday that the restaurant at 3050 Windy Hill Road and Powers Ferry Road has been listed for sale with a selling price of around $250,000 and a monthly lease of just under $25,000.

Last month the Atlanta Business Chronicle reported that the Sage Woodfire Tavern group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but there was no indication if any of its restaurants would be individually closed or put up for sale.

The Windy Hill location is adjacent to what’s known as Restaurant Row along Powers Ferry Road, and which has a rezoning case for a mixed-use development coming before the Cobb Board of Commissioners next week.

That project would include apartments and an active senior living community and retain the Rose & Crown Tavern, the only existing business surrounded by vacant restaurant space.

The Cobb Planning Commission recommended approval, but some nearby residents are opposed.

The Sage Woodfire Tavern property, which was once the site of a Houston’s restaurant, is not part of that assemblage.

The Sage Woodfire group also briefly operated the Sage Social Kitchen at the Merchants Festival. It closed last fall after only a few months in business.

East Cobb Restaurant Update: Jason’s Deli coming to former Sage/Chequer’s/Houlihan’s space

Jason's Deli, East Cobb

Some readers have asked, and we’ve been been able to get an answer: Jason’s Deli is coming to East Cobb, where Sage Social Kitchen, Chequers Seafood and Houlihan’s have come and gone.

But it won’t be for a while.

The Texas-based fast casual eatery chain operates 275 restaurants in 28 states, including 16 in Georgia and two in Cobb, near Cumberland and Town Center malls.

Brandi Alexander, a spokeswoman for Jason’s Deli, told East Cobb News only that “this location is planned to open in fall of this year. Unfortunately, that is all of the information we can provide at this time.”

The Merchants Festival location (1401 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 334) has been empty for nearly a year since Sage Social Kitchen closed in April 2017, after only a few months in business.

In addition to traditional deli-style menu options, Jason’s Deli also serves burgers, salads (and a salad bar), vegetarian dishes, soups, pasta entrees and a kid’s menu.

East Cobb Stockyard Burgers and Bones

The long-awaited opening of the East Cobb Stockyard Burgers and Bones location (previous East Cobb News post here) is taking place next week.

Management at The Avenue posted the news on Friday, and the photo above is what we saw when we went by there earlier this afternoon. The establishment was granted an alcohol license by the Cobb Community Development Agency on March 22.

The Marietta-based Fork U Concepts, the parent company of Stockyard Burgers and Bones, is saying that it’s taking applications from 10-6 Monday through Saturday at the new East Cobb location (4475 Roswell Road, in the former Brixx Pizza space). Job-hunters can also apply online at the Stockyard Burgers and Bones website.

More East Cobb restaurant news

Fork U Concepts also is expected to open a Taqueria Tsunami location (1275 Johnson Ferry Road) at the former Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagel, and here’s what the site looks like now.

A revised site plan was approved by Cobb commissioners in September, and it includes removal of the drive-through window once part of Caribou and expanding parking to 42 spaces.

There’s mostly a lot of mud in the parking lot and work trucks and crews. A sign in a window says a liquor license has been applied for, but county records indicate one also was granted on March 22.

East Cobb Muss & Turner’s restaurant closes abruptly

Muss & Turner's, East Cobb restaurant scores
East Cobb News file photo

After less than year in business, the East Cobb Muss & Turner’s restaurant has closed, effective today, at 1205 Johnson Ferry Road, in the Woodlawn Square Shopping Center.

Here’s the message that was posted on the restaurant’s social media pages, as of around 4 p.m. today:

“After a year of giving it our best shot, we have made the difficult decision to close our East Cobb location. We feel honored by the amount of support we have received from loyal fans (old and new) and are grateful to have forged such incredible relationships within this neighborhood. Thank you for your loyalty and support over the last year. It was truly a pleasure serving you. Thank you for joining us on this ride!”

Muss & Turner’s will continue to operate its original location in Smyrna, and partner Ryan Turner explained more about the decision to close in a release:

“Dining patterns among the East Cobb market varied significantly from our Smyrna location and, unfortunately, didn’t prove a financially viable model for our concept.”

Muss & Turner’s East Cobb was part of the Unsukay Concepts partnership, which operates the Smyrna Muss & Turner’s as well as Eleanor’s Restaurant in Smyrna and the Local Three Kitchen & Bar in Buckhead.

Turner, Todd Mussman and Chris Hall were part of a group that ran Common Quarter, which operated at the same Johnson Ferry Road location from 2013-17. After closing Common Quarter, they expanded the Muss and Turner’s concept into East Cobb and opened in March 2017.

Muss & Turner’s said it will honor East Cobb gift cards and loyalty points at the other Unsukay restaurants.

On Sunday the East Cobb Muss & Turner’s restaurant had been promoting its Sunday brunch menu, and in a comment thread on its Facebook page indicated that staff had been told earlier on Monday of the closing.

East Cobb Biz Notes: Cobb Antique Mall relocates to Canton Road

Cobb Antique Mall

After 15 years on Cobb Parkway at Gresham Road, the Cobb Antique Mall has relocated to Canton Road and is having what it’s terming a “soft” opening on Monday, starting at 10 a.m.

The new address is 2800 Canton Road, at the corner of Piedmont Road, in Suite 900 of the Piedmont Village Shopping Center (where a driver’s license office used to be). The phone number is 770-590-8989. The business received its new occupancy license on Jan. 9.

The Cobb Antique Mall closed at its old location on Dec. 15 to prepare for the move. The new store has 10,000 more square feet and according to management will feature many of the same vendors. Here’s more information for prospective vendors, with a Jan. 31 deadline for a year’s lease that includes either free rent or no commission taken for the year.

The hours for the Cobb Antique Mall are Monday-Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 12-6.

Salata to open Feb. 1

As we noted on Friday, the Salata restaurant at Providence Square (4101 Roswell Road, in the former Uncle Maddio’s spot), is opening on Feb. 1. At The Avenue East Cobb, Smallcakes, a cupcake and ice cream store, opened last week.

Also at The Avenue, J. Crew closed on Sunday as part of a larger reduction of stores for the clothing and apparel chain, and the Justice girls clothing store also will be closing soon.

Aspens halts Sunday brunch

The East Cobb location of Aspens Signature Steaks and Seafood (2942 Shallowford Road), is “taking a break” from serving Sunday brunch, but the announcement didn’t indicate when it might resume. Dinner service continues seven days a week starting at 5 p.m.

Salata to open in East Cobb on Feb. 1; Smallcakes opens at The Avenue; J. Crew closing

Salata East Cobb

It’s been a busy week on the new restaurant front in East Cobb. In addition to the opening of Ming’s Asian Kitchen we posted on Wednesday, Salata, the long-awaited salad and healthy foods eatery that’s been preparing space in Providence Square Shopping Center, has announced that it will open for business on Feb. 1.

The announcement came late Thursday on the Salata Twitter feed as well as the company’s Facebook page, although there was no news posted when we went by earlier today.

It’s the third Georgia location for the Houston-based Salata, which is at Atlantic Station and Glenridge Point. Salata has nearly 70 restaurants, mostly in Texas, as well as California, Illinois and Oklahoma.

J. Crew The Avenue
The J. Crew store at The Avenue is one of five to close in Atlanta this month.

The salads can be made with a selection of more than 50 vegetable toppings, 10 dressings, fruits, cheeses, fish, chicken and turkey and egg, croutons, bacon and pasta and protein options. In addition to salad wraps, Salata serves soups, desserts, lemonade and teas.

Here’s the full menu.

The hours of operation will be Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Salata is located in the freestanding former Uncle Maddio’s space at 4101 Roswell Road, Suite 1100. The phone number is 470-200-0876 and online ordering will be available.

Comings and goings at The Avenue

At The Avenue East Cobb, there’s good news and bad news: Smallcakes, a cupcake and ice cream shop, has opened in Suite 1550, next to the soon-to-be-shuttered Justice, a girls clothing store, and two doors down from Panera Bread.

It’s the second attempt in East Cobb for Smallcakes, which had a location at 2424 Roswell Road. The chain operates around 200 stores in 31 states.

J. Crew, the clothing retailer, is preparing to shut down operations at The Avenue. According to a report at Tomorrow’s News Today, it’s one of five Atlanta-area stores to close this month, and the last day of business is Sunday. When we went by today, however, the store was nearly empty, as packing up was continuing.

Café 33 restaurant closes after more than six years in Sprayberry area

Cafe 33 restaurant closes

Late Friday night the Café 33 restaurant on East Piedmont Road announced it has closed, but gave no reason for the decision. The restaurant’s website also has been taken down, and the last day of business was New Year’s Eve.

On the restaurant’s Facebook page was the following message:

Cafe 33 would like to Thank all of our loyal customers who have supported us during the last 6 1/2 years.

We are very appreciative of your friendships and your business. We are sorry to say that we must close our doors at this time.

THANK YOU again and please continue to support the small family owned businesses in your community. We cannot survive without you.

UPDATED, 5:30 p.m. Saturday: We went by Café 33 after posting this, and noticed the same message posted in the windows and on the front door (and added the photo at the top and to the right).

All of the furniture had been cleared out of the lobby and dining area.

A further message from the restaurant about its closure was added to a comment thread earlier this afternoon:

Unfortunately, the foot traffic in the area has subsided so much that we were forced to shut the doors as well as not having support from our landlord on such issues as flooding coming in the front door, etc. We hope to maybe relocate but it wouldn’t be for a while. We will keep everyone posted…but for now Thank you from all of us.

Returning to original post:

Café 33 was started by Shane Clements, a Sprayberry High School graduate, in honor of his mother, and opened for breakfast and lunch at 2595 Sandy Plains Road, right across the street from his old school.

The restaurant moved to the Sprayberry Collection Shopping Center across the intersection at 2595 East Piedmont Road and added a dinner menu and a catering service.

Café 33 is the second Northeast Cobb restaurant in recent weeks to close. On Christmas Eve, The Rib Ranch closed after nearly 35 years on Canton Road.

EAST COBB RESTAURANTS UPDATE: Black Swan Tavern, La Novia Taqueria now open

Black Swan Tavern

Two new East Cobb restaurants we’ve been mentioning in recent weeks finally opened their doors this week.

The Black Swan Tavern (1401 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 128, Merchants Festival Shopping Center), the first Cobb location for the Dunwoody Restaurant Group, is open for lunch and dinner daily, serving up traditional English pub fare, salads, sandwiches and a robust beer menu. Black Swan Tavern

La Novia Taqueria (255 Village Parkway, Paper Mill Village, Suite 330) is open for dinner daily and is the newest venture from the Moxie Burger ownership group, which operates the original location nearby in Paper Mill Village.

Both new places are located in spaces that have seen a number of restaurants come and go. The Black Swan Tavern is where Churchill’s Pub operated for many years. La Novia Taqueria is in space that once was Caffe Fortunato and Valenti’s.

They also are attempting to fill a gap menu-wise. The only other pub-style restaurants in East Cobb are Keegan’s on Shallowford Road at Johnson Ferry Road, and the Rose & Crown Tavern on Powers Ferry Road.

The taqueria concept is getting another go in East Cobb after the closure of Cheeky Taqueria at The Avenue (where Tin Lizzy Cantina is located now). The Taqueria Tsunami group based at the Marietta Square is making plans to convert the old Caribou Coffee location on Johnson Ferry, and recently opened a location in Sandy Springs.

The Taqueria Tsunami group of restaurants also includes Stockyard Burgers and Bones, which is slated to open next spring at The Avenue.

Here’s what the management The Black Swan Tavern says it’s trying to convey with its atmosphere:

“We believe in ‘snugness not smugness’ and want you to feel that this is part of your neighbourhood and after all we all need our ‘local’!”

The hours are 11:30 a.m.-1 a.m. Monday-Thursday; 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m. Friday-Saturday and 12:30 p.m.-midnight Sunday. Phone is 678-401-5286.

La Novia Taqueria is open 5:30- 9 p.m. seven days a week, phone 678-903-5858. The Moxie Burger group, which has a second East Cobb location on Shallowford Road and another in Roswell, is also stressing the “neighborhood gathering place” theme, ” . . . a place where families and friends of all ages can eat, drink, visit, and relax together.”

The dinner menu features 10 taco variations, including duck and chorizo, and there are soups, salads, full plates, a children’ menu and a drink menu with a variety of margarita options.

Black Swan Tavern opening delayed to next week

Black Swan Tavern

We mentioned over the weekend that the opening for the Black Swan Tavern (1401 Johnson Ferry Road, in the Merchants Festival Shopping Center) was set for Thursday.

But that’s not going to happen, as health inspection delays and scheduled fundraisers this weekend are pushing back the opening into early next week. From the tavern’s Facebook page: “It’ll probably be Tuesday but we are pushing for Monday. Cheers and our apologies!”

Stockyard Burgers and Bones coming to The Avenue East Cobb

Stockyard Burgers and Bones
Stockyard Burgers and Bones is moving into the former Brixx pizza space at The Avenue East Cobb (East Cobb News file photo).

Earlier this fall East Cobb News reported on plans to open a Taqueria Tsunami restaurant at the old Caribou Coffee/Einstein Bros. Bagel location on Johnson Ferry Road. As it turns out, the owners of that Marietta-based Latin-Asian fusion chain also have their eyes on expanding their Stockyard Burgers concept to East Cobb.

Scoop OTP is reporting that Fork U Concepts is planning an early 2018 opening for Stockyard Burgers and Bones at The Avenue East Cobb, in the former Brixx pizza location.

It’s the latest development in a flurry of news about forthcoming East Cobb restaurants. Last week we reported that La Novia Taqueria, operated by the Moxie Burger ownership team, is hiring for its new spot at Paper Mill Village.

Fork U Concepts has been gradually expanding its various restaurant brands in recent months in metro Atlanta. The company got and received a zoning stipulation from the Cobb Board of Commissioners to remove the drivethrough at the former Caribou Coffee and restripe the parking lot to expand availability to 42 spaces for Taqueria Tsunami, which is expected to open in March.

Stockyard Burgers and Bones first opened on the Marietta Square and has expanded to Vinings and soon will open in Sandy Springs. East Cobb will be its fourth location.

Taqueria Tsunami also began on the Marietta Square and has expanded to Woodstock, Athens, Roswell and Simpsonville, Ky. and also is planning an opening soon for Sandy Springs.

The Black Swan Tavern has been gearing up for opening at the Merchants Festival Shopping Center (1401 Johnson Ferry Road, in the old Churchill’s Pub space), since the summer. The owners from Dunwoody Restaurant Group announced Thursday that it also is beginning the hiring process, and that “the doors open next week.”
