Skip graduated Sprayberry High School in Marietta where he was active in both the band and NJROTC. The Lance Corporal Skip Wells Foundation offers scholarships to help students go to college or tech school to further their education.

Pita Mediterranean Street Food chain coming to East Cobb

East Cobb Pita Mediterranean Street Food

A location of the growing Atlanta-based Pita Mediterranean Street Food chain is coming to East Cobb.

This is at the Sandy Plains Centre (2960 Shallowford Road), in Suite 112 formerly occupied by Teriyaki Madness. Last week, Pita got an alcohol license. There’s no opening date that’s been announced yet.

Pita began in 2011 with a store in Peachtree City, and has since expanded to 20 stores in metro Atlanta and north Georgia. The East Cobb location, which is one of several slated to open soon, would be close to existing Pita restaurants near Town Center and the Marietta Square.

The eatery features Greek menu items, including pita and gyro options, and well as Middle Eastern specialties including shawarma, falafel, kafta, hummus, ganoush, rice bowls, salads, kids’ plates and desserts.

The entrees range from $7.95 to $13.99.

Top East Cobb stories for 2018: Comings and goings in restaurants, businesses and development

top East Cobb stories for 2018, Sprayberry Crossing
Citizens living near the Sprayberry Crossing Shopping Center demanded county officials do something about the property that has been blighted for years. (ECN file)

We’re starting off our compilation of top East Cobb stories for 2018 with a rundown of what opened and closed in the community this year, especially restaurants, other notable businesses and zoning and development matters.

These are based on reader trends as well as newsworthiness. As you can see, this was quite the year in East Cobb for these subjects, especially restaurants and some major zoning cases that could establish changing development trends.

Two major redevelopment projects in the Powers Ferry Road corridor were approved this year, and they’re slated to transform an area that’s being revived due in part to its proximity to SunTrust Park and The Battery Atlanta.

Those projects weren’t without their critics, concerned about high density and traffic that’s a growing issue elsewhere in East Cobb and beyond.

Citizens fed up with years of inaction over the run-down Sprayberry Crossing Shopping Center organized a community meeting that drew many county officials, but nothing has happened despite a court order.

East Cobb Jason’s Deli opening update: Monday’s the day, after 2 delays

East Cobb Jason's Deli opening

We got word this afternoon from Greg Felter, the restaurant’s managing partner, that the East Cobb Jason’s Deli opening will be this Monday, Nov. 12.

It was supposed to be Oct. 22 but renovation delays pushed that back. Hours are 10-10 seven days a week.

The Houston-based fast casual eatery chain operates 275 restaurants in 28 states, including 16 in Georgia and two in Cobb, near Cumberland and Town Center malls.

In addition to traditional deli-style menu options, Jason’s Deli also serves burgers, salads (and a salad bar), vegetarian dishes, soups, pasta entrees and a kid’s menu.

The Jason’s Deli space at Merchants Exchange (1401 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 334) has been the home for Sage Social Kitchen, Chequers Seafood and Steak and Houlihan’s.

East Cobb Jason’s Deli opening at Merchants Exchange on Oct. 22

East Cobb Jason's Deli

An update to a story we posted back in May about the forthcoming East Cobb Jason’s Deli location: There is now an opening date.

Benny Marchuk, who’s the manager of the East Cobb location, called East Cobb News today to report that the first day of business will be on Oct. 22.

Opening hours will be from 10-10 seven days a week. The managing partner is Greg Felter.

He also sent the above photo of the outside of the building at the Merchants Festival Shopping Center (1401 Johnson Ferry Road, Suite 334), and said there’s still some work being done to renovate the inside.

That’s quite a dramatic difference from the space that used to be Sage Social Kitchen and Houlihan’s.

Marchuk also said he’s in the process of hiring, and is accepting applications for the positions listed below on the flyer (here’s the link to apply online).

The Texas-based fast casual eatery chain operates 275 restaurants in 28 states, including 16 in Georgia and two in Cobb, near Cumberland and Town Center malls.

In addition to traditional deli-style menu options, Jason’s Deli also serves burgers, salads (and a salad bar), vegetarian dishes, soups, pasta entrees and a kid’s menu.

East Cobb Biz Notes: Ming’s Asian Kitchen coming soon; what’s new at The Avenue; Walmart grocery closing on Canton Road

Ming's Asian Kitchen, East Cobb biz notes

We’ve heard from readers about the forthcoming Ming’s Asian Kitchen, and passed by the other day and saw this sign out front.

Ming’s will be located in the former Niecy’s Cafe space (4665 Lower Roswell Road, at Woodlawn Drive), which has been the site of a number of restaurants in recent years. Niecy’s opened in 2015 but closed earlier this year.

There’s no other readily available information yet about when Ming’s is slated to open, but we’ll post that here when we get more details.

In other East Cobb business news, there are two new food spots coming or have opened at The Avenue East Cobb (in addition to the Stockyard Burgers & Bones slated for next spring):

  • WhatNowAtlanta is reporting that Smallcakes, which once was open on Roswell Road at East Piedmont Road, will be opening soon at The Avenue (4475 Roswell Road), and will be located next to the Hand & Stone store;
  • Kale Me Crazy, a Atlanta-based chain of healthy food cafes and juice shops, got its business license last week and is open at The Avenue. The menu features salads, wraps, toasts (yes, avocado!) and açaí bowls, and the store sells a full line of juice-based “cleansing packages” and does catering. Hours are Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-8:30 pm; Saturday 9 a.m.-8 p.m; Sunday 9 a.m.-6 p.m.;
  • This is the last week of business at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, 3372 Canton Road, in the Blackwell Square Shopping Center, after it was announced last month that the store is closing on Dec. 4. It’s the second Walmart grocery to leave the East Cobb area this year; the Sandy Plains Village location closed in March. The only such store remaining close by is at 3101 Roswell Road, in the Olde Mill Shopping Center.

The following new businesses were granted licenses by the Cobb Community Development Department in the last week:

  • Agape Remodeling, 2694 Lower Roswell Road (handyman);
  • Healthy Smoothies, 2550 Sandy Plains Road (health food store);
  • Heyward Accounting, 3837 Courson Street (accounting services);
  • Perks Coffee, 3000 Windy Hill Road, Suite 176 (restaurant);
  • Siding Pro, 2100 Wood Court (Siding contractor).
